Youths to Vote in Own ‘City Elections’

Share

Seems candidates other than Bill Taylor and Larry Fick are bidding to succeed Greg Stratton as Simi Valley mayor.

The Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley will hold its annual city elections at 4 p.m. Tuesday with youngsters vying for such posts as mayor, judge, police and fire chief, firefighters, police officers and paramedics.

The winners will serve one-day terms Nov. 11 when the club is temporarily turned into a mock city. Local firefighters will make an appearance to meet the club’s fire chief and their counterparts and give kids an opportunity to see a fire truck up close.

Shannon Prusa, club activities coordinator, said the elections are fun and educational. “Members of the club are voting the same day as their parents are, realizing the importance of voting,” she said. “Members also learn about the election process, through petitions, campaigns and speech writing.”
