Cadence Design Systems Inc., a chip-design software maker, said it is firing about 560 workers, or 12% of its work force, and is taking $36 million in fourth-quarter charges as it trims costs to make its consulting business more profitable. The company said the cuts will save about $8 million in the fourth quarter and $60 million in fiscal 1999. The company also is consolidating 18 to 20 of its smaller consulting and sales offices into larger offices, mostly in North America, to reduce costs. Shares of San Jose-based Cadence rose $5.31 to close at $25.31 on the New York Stock Exchange.
