Costa Mesa Comes Back Against Artists

Costa Mesa rallied to score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to give the Mustangs a 35-13 victory over Laguna Beach in a Pacific Coast League game Friday at Laguna Beach.

Josh Mendez scored on a five-yard run and Jimmy Herzog scored on runs of five and six yards in the final quarter for Costa Mesa (6-3, 3-1 in league). Herzog finished with 87 yards in 41 carries.

Ryan Schissler gave Laguna Beach (3-6, 2-2) a 7-0 lead in the second quarter on a 12-yard run. Schissler completed six of 17 passes for 69 yards.

Costa Mesa came back on a Dave Weir touchdown pass to Ricky Martin and a one-yard run by Weir to take a 14-7 lead in the third quarter.

Pat Chesley closed Laguna Beach to 14-13, scoring on a 58-yard run. He finished with 58 yards in 10 carries.

In another Pacific Coast League game:

University 29, Estancia 8--University improved to 5-3-1, 3-1 in league with its victory at Irvine High. The Trojans led, 15-8, at halftime.

Leading 9-0, Collin Cavanaugh ran in from 20 yards to make it 15-0. The Eagles (1-8, 0-4) came back on an 11-yard touchdown run by Manu Tanielu.

Daniel Tadych led University with 96 yards rushing in 14 carries. Quarterback Andy Dennis scored on a three-yard third-quarter run. He completed six of 12 passes.
