Chinese Trial

Referring to the trial of the alleged gang leader Cheung Tze-keung in the mainland of China, “Gangland Trial Steals Headlines in Hong Kong “ (Oct. 31) says that the trial sets a dangerous precedent for Hong Kong crimes being adjudicated in Chinese courts. It is wrong to suggest the trial is a precedent. In fact, the defendant in this case was arrested in the mainland and is being tried for crimes allegedly committed in the mainland. It is inappropriate for Hong Kong to seek Cheung’s return while court proceedings in the mainland are underway. The mainland authorities have not interfered with Hong Kong’s judicial system and it would be wrong for Hong Kong to interfere with the mainland’s judicial system.

There is insufficient evidence at the moment to prosecute Cheung for kidnapping in Hong Kong. The police are continuing their investigations, and a Hong Kong police officer has been sent to attend the trial to gather any information that may help in the bringing of charges in Hong Kong.
