It’s the Start of Rush Week for the Bruins

Kareem Rush, a standout at the Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, Mo., and younger brother of Bruin freshman JaRon Rush, is expected to commit to UCLA during the early signing period that begins today.

If so, the Bruins will get a player whose high school coach says can fill several roles. At 6-7 and 195 pounds, Rush is taller than his brother and quick enough to alternate between small forward and shooting guard.

“He can handle the [basketball], he’s an outstanding three-point shooter and a great slasher to the basket,” Pembroke Hill Coach Rick Allison said. “The Bruins could probably put Kareem anywhere they want.”

The Bruins could use fresh bodies right now--minor but nagging injuries have beset the team.

A sore knee sent Rico Hines to the sideline on a recent afternoon. Sean Farnham’s right foot has bothered him. Rush and Dan Gadzuric suffered bouts of flu.

Assistant coach Michael Holton has been pressed into action, the former guard participating in five-on-five drills.

“I have daydreamed in practice about the day we have everyone healthy,” Coach Steve Lavin said. “Then we can set the piranhas free.”
