Youths, Lions Club Team Up on Project

In an effort to help others and keep themselves on the right path, about 15 at-risk teenagers performed community service Saturday at a children’s camp.

Organized by the Lion Clubs International and the Los Angeles County Probation Department, the group of teens spruced up cabins at the camp used during summer months by deaf children, said Steve Hulcy, a deputy probation officer and member of the Lions.

The activity was designed to boost the young people’s feelings of self-worth, Hulcy said. “A certain amount of spiritual strength is gained through service,” he said. The teens worked at Teresita Pines Wilderness Camp, which is in the San Gabriel Mountains near Wrightwood. They spent the day installing dry wall, putting in windows and digging trenches, said John Bauer, camp manager.
