With international skateboard greats catching air and doing olleys, the city will open its long-awaited skate park Saturday at Pleasant Valley Park.

The 12,000-square-foot outdoor facility is next to the picnic pavilion in the park at Temple Avenue and Ponderosa Drive.

The skate park is a joint venture between the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District and the city.

A grand opening ceremony will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. There will be free refreshments and giveaways.

But the highlight will be a 10 a.m. demonstration by the “1998 Bones Brigade.”

They will take to the concrete to show the latest techniques in this wheeled sport.

Team members include Steve Cababallero; Jason Ellis of Australia; Danny Wainwright of England; Giorgio Zattoni of Italy; Javier Sarmiento of Spain; Moses Itkonen of Canada; and Jon Comer, Pat Channita and Andy MacDonald of the United States.

After the demonstration, those who attend will be able to skate alongside the professionals.
