Every time the Treasury issues a new currency denomination, the latest being the $20 bill, The Times dutifully does a story (“Computers Become the Key to Counterfeiting,” Nov. 5). While counterfeiting elimination is Treasury’s reported goal, and makes for good reading, an equally important reason for the new currency is that the threads embedded in the bills will ultimately allow the government to detect via sophisticated devices the amount of currency a citizen carries with him out of the country. This is the complete story of our new currency.
