Michel Trudeau, 23, a son of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, died in a hiking accident in British Columbia, police said. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Nelson, B.C., said Trudeau was missing and presumed drowned in Kokanee Lake after he and three other hikers were struck by an avalanche while walking along a trail Saturday. Trudeau and Andrew Bednarz, also 23, were swept into the lake. Bednarz and the two other hikers were able to move to higher ground. The three survivors were rescued. Officials were attempting to search for Trudeau’s body, but efforts were hampered by bad weather, including heavy snow and poor visibility. The former prime minister, 79, held power from 1968 to 1984 except for a nine-month gap. He has two other sons, Sacha and Justin. He and Margaret, the mother of his sons, are divorced.
