Easy Fixes for a Safe Home
Hazards that cause falls, slips or trips in the home are easy to overlook but quick to fix. Come on--how much time could it take to clear a passageway of a cord or to put nonskid pads under area rugs? Here are other tips:
* Lighting is important: Put a light switch by the door in each room. Put a lighted on-off switch at the top and bottom of staircases. Replace burned-out or dim lightbulbs in living areas and hallways, and on landings and stairs.
* Passageways should be clear: Create wide passageways between living areas. Remove cords, glass tables and furniture that’s wobbly or has sharp edges.
* Replace floor coverings that buckle or curl or that have holes or frayed edges. Keep stairs and floors free of clutter.
