Jose Luis Pineda’s goal lifted Honduras to a 2-1 victory over El Salvador and a third-place finish Wednesday night in Project Soccer Relief ‘98, a charity soccer tournament at the Coliseum to benefit victims of Hurricane Mitch.

Guatemala--which defeated Honduras, 6-5, on penalty kicks Tuesday night--played Mexico for the championship late Wednesday night.

Pineda headed Cesar Obando’s 23-yard free kick, and redirected the ball into the upper left corner of the net in the 81st minute.

Obando scored the game’s first goal on a penalty kick in the fourth minute, but Israel Castro tied the score on a 20-yard shot in the 49th.

Proceeds from the tournament will go to CARE, an international relief agency.

Anne Moran, CARE’s executive director for the Southwest United States, said the agency expects to raise about $500,000 from gate receipts, television revenues and contributions.

Tuesday night’s Guatemala-Honduras game drew 21,305.
