Crackdown in Karachi Ordered

Pakistan’s prime minister suspended civil rights in a southern province and ordered soldiers out of the barracks to quell violence in Karachi, where 1,000 people have died in factional fighting. Nawaz Sharif deployed the army in Sindh province to restore order and set up military courts to try those suspected of fomenting the violence. The courts will decide cases within days, he said. Sharif last month dismissed the elected provincial government of Sindh amid widespread political violence. Human rights groups and other opposition parties called the move unconstitutional and a threat to democracy.
