Times have certainly changed when UCLA must lose to USC in order to secure a Rose Bowl berth.

Let’s run down the reality of L.A. college football:

1. UCLA is a very good team, but USC is quickly closing the gap.

2. Cade McNown should not be allowed to come near that Heisman (property of Ricky Williams)--this is a best-player trophy, not MVP.

3. UCLA is overrated and plays down to its opponent. Please, Bruin fans, stop complaining that every team gets up to play them. They do, but do you see Florida and Florida State and the other top teams struggling against weak opponents week in and week out?

4. UCLA is two fumbles and one pass from being unranked, while USC is a good field-goal kicker away from battling for Fiesta Bowl rights. True, UCLA does get the job done, but there’s a very small gap between the quality of these two teams.

Am I sensing a little doubt from Bruin fans [Viewpoint, Nov. 14]? Joe Mock from Malibu writes “with or without a national championship trophy” and Derrick Eichelberger from Santa Barbara states “regardless of what happens to the Bruins over the next four games, I wanted to say thank you for the last 20 games.”

These comments sound like fans preparing themselves for a loss to the Trojans and a lost shot at a national championship.
