Chiapas Rebels Stick With Talks

Zapatista guerrilla leaders vowed Sunday to press ahead with talks with Mexican congressional mediators that could prepare a bridge to peace in troubled Chiapas state.

The talks, being held in this former colonial capital at the rebels’ behest, hovered on the brink of collapse late Saturday when mutual recriminations threatened to derail the first face-to-face encounter between the two sides in nearly two years.

But on Sunday, the crisis appeared to recede.

“We are coming with open hearts, and that is how we will listen to them,” rebel leaders said in a news release early Sunday.
