Tomotsu Takahashi; Self-Employed Gardener

Longtime Oxnard resident and gardener Tomotsu “Tom” Takahashi died at home Friday following a long battle with cancer. He was 77.

Takahashi was born Dec. 9, 1920, in North Platte, Neb. He moved with his family to Greeley, Colo., where his parents farmed and he attended grade school and high school.

In 1956, Takahashi moved to Oxnard, where he worked as a farm machine mechanic before starting his gardening business. He was a self-employed gardener for 36 years, his family said.

Takahashi was a longtime member of the Oxnard Buddhist Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Yoshiko Takahashi of Oxnard; four daughters, Jean Amano of Lafayette, Nadine Baggs of Nipomo, Donna Schreiner of Sacramento and Julie Conaway of Grover Beach; a brother, Charles Takahashi of Greeley, Colo.; and nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Oxnard Buddhist Temple. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ivy Lawn Memorial park in Ventura.

Camino del Sol Memorial Center & Funeral Home in Oxnard is handling the arrangements.
