* Re “America Online Is Near $4-Billion Deal to Acquire Netscape,” Nov. 23: Less and less competition occurs in the U.S. year after year because of large buyouts like this. It neither helps provide a better product nor increases opportunities in the market. The little guy is always left out of the equation, whether it’s another business or the consumer.

We need a real way to promote the small business, not consolidation in the portal market for the benefit of the large advertiser and those who can afford to purchase keywords. Where is the Federal Trade Commission when you need it?
