The trunk of a tree grows stronger with some movement, and a tree should only be tied rigidly to a stake when it is in a nursery can.

A new metal tree stake available at home improvement and garden supply stores greatly simplifies staking a tree, and still allows it to sway gently in the breeze. The stake, called Reddy Stake, also stands away from the tree, supporting the trunk on an arm so it does not shade the trunk, which can cause the tree to grow at an angle.

You don’t need to pound the stake into the ground. Reddy Stake screws in, so it is easy to put it in firm ground away from the tree’s root ball. Once it is in, a smaller stake secures it, and a sturdy, adjustable arm holds the soft, flexible tie that attaches to the trunk.
