3 Held in Clerk’s Slaying Freed for Lack of Evidence
Three men arrested in the shooting death of a Duarte night clerk were ordered released for lack of evidence, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.
Michael Reese, 38; Calvin Capers, 21; and Roland Bynum, 24, were arrested Monday afternoon at an apartment complex near the 7-Eleven store where 51-year-old Syed Hussain was shot during a robbery early that morning. Hussain--a father of five and co-owner of the store--had apparently complied with his assailants but was shot anyway.
“The [suspects] were arrested because we had reasonable cause to believe they were responsible,” said sheriff’s Det. Gil Carrillo.
But investigators had not compiled enough evidence Wednesday to file a case against the men.
“Hopefully, if my paperwork goes through,” Carrillo said, “they’ll be released in time to eat Thanksgiving dinner with their families.”
