Mailer Firm, Former Assemblyman Fined for Breaking Election Law
California’s political watchdog has fined former Los Angeles Assemblyman Willard Murray, his son, state Sen.-elect Kevin Murray and a slate mailer company more than $60,000 for dozens of violations of state election law.
The violations included tardy and shoddy financial disclosure reports.
The Fair Political Practices Commission reported Wednesday that the fines stemmed from two cases involving the Murrays and the United Democratic Campaign Committee--one in 1994 targeting the father and another in 1996.
The two Murrays and the mailer company were fined $38,000 for 25 violations. The ethics panel also imposed $22,250 in fines on Kevin Murray (D-Los Angeles), and his political campaign committee, the Friends of Kevin Murray.
According to the panel, the violations included late filing of campaign disclosure reports, incomplete disclosures and a failure to abide by slate mailer disclaimers.
The panel enforces the Political Reform Act, the state’s campaign finance and election law that was adopted by voters after the Watergate scandals.
