Oilers Roll Over Slumping Flames

Andrei Kovalenko’s tiebreaking goal 4:10 into the third period gave the Edmonton Oilers a 3-2 victory Friday night over the Flames at Calgary.

It was the ninth goal of the season for Kovalenko, who scored only six last season.

The Flames now have been outscored 9-0 in the third period in losing five consecutive games.

Roman Hamrlik and Mike Grier also scored for Edmonton in the first of six meetings between the teams.

Dallas 4, Washington 0--Mike Modano had two goals and an assist and Derian Hatcher scored twice to lead the Stars at Dallas.

Jamie Langenbrunner and Richard Matvichuk each had two assists for the Stars, 9-2-1 at home and 5-1-1 in their last seven games. Ed Belfour stopped 15 shots to register his first shutout of the season and 41st of his career.

Pittsburgh 2, N.Y. Rangers 2--Newly acquired Alexei Kovalev assisted on Robert Lang’s goal with 15 seconds remaining in regulation to help give the Penguins a tie at Pittsburgh.

The teams were matched two days after their five-player trade. Petr Nedved, Chris Tamer and Sean Pronger all played for the Rangers while Kovalev and Harry York made their debuts with the Penguins.

With goalie Tom Barrasso pulled for an extra skater, Kovalev passed to Lang, who scored against Mike Richter, who is winless since Oct. 30 at 0-4-2.

San Jose 4, St. Louis 2--Jeff Norton scored a power-play goal with 8:56 remaining at St. Louis to help give the Sharks their first road victory.

After Chris Pronger’s goal early in the third period gave the Blues a 2-1 lead, Steve Guolla, Marco Sturm and Norton scored for San Jose.

Detroit 7, Vancouver 1--Igor Larionov and Brendan Shanahan each had a goal and two assists in a seven-goal third period for the Red Wings at Detroit.

Larry Murphy had two goals and goaltender Norm Maracle won his third consecutive start in place of injured Chris Osgood as the Red Wings won their fourth in a row.

Boston 5, Montreal 1--The Bruins scored five goals in the third period, two by Sergei Samsonov in a span of about six minutes, at Montreal.

Ray Bourque, Don Sweeney and Jason Allison also had third-period scores for the Bruins, who had all of their goals in the opening 12:19 of the final period en route to their fourth consecutive win.

Philadelphia 4, Toronto 3--Eric Lindros and Keith Jones each had a goal and two assists and John LeClair scored the winning goal at Philadelphia.

Rod Brind’Amour also scored and LeClair added two assists for Philadelphia, which ended Toronto’s three-game winning streak.

Florida 2, Tampa Bay 1--Scott Mellanby scored two goals at Tampa to help the Panthers end a five-game winless streak and hand the Lightning its seventh consecutive defeat.
