Union Leader Steps Aside Amid Inquiry

The head of a union representing 120,000 city workers in New York is stepping down while the parent union investigates possible corruption. The executive director, Stanley Hill, will take an unpaid leave of absence starting Monday to facilitate the internal inquiry, said Jean Nolan, a spokeswoman for the parent union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. The decision follows a series of problems for District Council 37, which is already under investigation by the Manhattan district attorney’s office. For the duration of AFSCME’s investigation, the council will be run by a nationally appointed administrator.
