One Man’s Irish Aye
Your most enjoyable article on Ortega Highway [Road Trip, by E. Scott Reckard, Aug. 27] brought back fond memories of my visit to relatives in San Juan Capistrano last Easter when I was on a “mission” to buy a DeLorean sports car.
As a patriotic Northern Irishman, I fulfilled a dream to own a DeLorean (the DMC was manufactured in Belfast). Where better to enjoy the beast than over the Ortega Highway again and again? It reminded me of country roads in the wilds of northwest Ireland, though on the latter, one doesn’t encounter so many speed-trap cops!
I’ll be back this fall to drive my new toy to Baltimore to ship back to Northern Ireland. You can be sure I’ll be on the Ortega again. Back roads are best; highways are boring.
I hope your stories highlight the need to preserve these gems rather than upgrade by widening, straightening and destroying. Let the masses use the motor ways and save these back roads for enthusiasts.
