No Surprise There

Share

I was amused when I read the article “Country at Pop Border Crossroad” (Sept. 23) because of the apparently surprised reaction of the industry people to the fact that country songs are finding airplay on pop/Top 40 stations. It was no surprise to me.

Maybe these people are just out of touch with the public and their tastes. I am in my 30th year as a deejay. I custom-produce tapes that have been heard in 36 American states and 12 foreign countries, and what my listeners prefer is a wide variety of music. I have incorporated the music of LeAnn Rimes and Shania Twain in my programs since the first day of their release to the delight and rave reviews of my audience.

Unfortunately for listeners of contemporary radio, where stations are locked into one format, if they want the kind of variety my experience has shown they crave, they must keep hopping between stations.

To those of us who aren’t brainwashed to one type of music, the “new” country/pop crossover is neither new nor surprising.
