Latino Clinic Serves Uninsured Patients
A nonprofit health clinic, the first of its kind in Santa Ana, has opened to provide medical care to those without insurance or work-related benefits.
Services at Clinica Medica Latino Americana will cost $20 per visit. The Consortium of Physicians from Latin America, known as COPHYLA, led by its chief executive officer, Dr. Rolando Castillo, opened the clinic to help uninsured community members.
Founded in 1990, COPHYLA assists its members who have graduated from Latin American medical schools in obtaining the appropriate medical licenses and state certification so they may practice medicine and better serve the Latino community.
Manuel Garcia, a media specialist with the California League Conservation of Voters, has worked with Castillo on the effort for several years.
“People need access to medical care,” Garcia said. “Three out of five Latino children don’t have medical care in Southern California.”
The clinic, which opened earlier in the month, will be served by seven physicians and open seven days a week.
Garcia said that physicians and staff members speak Spanish and are culturally sensitive.
