Police Brutality Case Settled for $3 Million
New York City agreed to pay nearly $3 million to settle lawsuits filed by the family of Anthony Baez, who was choked to death in December 1994 by a police officer. Baez was playing touch football in the street with his brothers when a ball hit Francis Livoti’s patrol car. Livoti tried to stop the game, and Baez, 29, died in the struggle. Police ruled Livoti used an illegal chokehold. Livoti was acquitted in 1996 of negligent homicide. Livoti was fired from the force and was convicted of violating Baez’s civil rights in federal court.
