‘Arizona Dream’

This 1992 film is a dazzling slice of tragicomic Americana, a kind of cross between Gus Van Sant and Robert Altman. It is envisioned with magic realism by the Oscar-nominated Emir Kusturica (from the region formerly known as Yugoslavia) from David Watkins’ script. It has an iconic cast that only a film buff could come up with: Faye Dunaway and Johnny Depp (both pictured), Jerry Lewis, Lili Taylor and Vincent Gallo, plus cameos by Paulina Porizkova and Michael J. Pollard. Content to count fish for New York’s Department of Fish and Game, Depp is summoned to his Arizona hometown to serve as best man to his uncle (Lewis), the local Cadillac dealer, who’s going to marry Porizkova. In an instant, Depp is caught up in a caldron of other people’s guilts and dreams, starting with his uncle moving on to rich manic-depressive Dunaway and her oppressed stepdaughter (Lili Taylor) (TMC Monday at 12:30 p.m.).
