Legislators Open Hearings on School District Control

Share

The state Assembly’s Select Committee on the Compton Unified School District conducted the first in a series of public hearings Wednesday evening.

The hearing, at district headquarters, offered parents and local residents a chance to hear updated reports from state and district officials regarding the school system, which was taken over by state administrators in 1993.

State legislation, sponsored by Assemblyman Carl Washington (D-Compton), requires the district to meet five criteria before the state will return the district to local control: raise academic performances, shore up the district’s finances, improve training for administrators, renovate school buildings and improve community relations.
