Sailer Happier Rolling 7s

Share

It’s the second week of October, Bruins. Do you know where your star kicker is?

Chris Sailer, a first-team All-American last season in some voting, is off to an impressive start with his kickoffs and punting, but has yet to kick a field goal. His three chances in three games have resulted in a pair of misses, from 47 and 42 yards in the tall grass at Houston, and one block, last Saturday against Washington State.

“It’s strange,” said Sailer, who had 24 chances in 1997. “But our offense is playing so well that I haven’t had many chances for field goals. That’s fine with me. Scoring touchdowns, scoring points, winning games. . . . I’d rather be counting by sevens than threes.”

Kickoff for the Oct. 31 game against Stanford at the Rose Bowl has been set for 3:30 p.m. . . . Pacific 10 athletic directors voted to give the Bruins the $507,032 in TV money lost with the cancellation of the Miami game, a move of generosity that surprised even some at UCLA. Regardless of whether the Bruins and Hurricanes end up playing Dec. 5, the date now under discussion, that payment is final.
