Vaughn Out Indefinitely Because of Thigh Injury

The San Diego Padres overcame numerous injuries in winning the National League West championship. And they believe that experience will help them while playing without Greg Vaughn, who suffered a thigh injury in Game 1 Wednesday night.

The power-hitting outfielder is listed as day to day, but Padre Manager Bruce Bochy isn’t counting on Vaughn returning soon.

“I doesn’t look good right now,” Bochy said. “He’s real sore, and it’s hard to say how long. [Padre doctors] think possibly three to four days, but it could be up to 10 days. It’s a situation where we have to continue to evaluate him.”

Vaughn suffered a strained left quadriceps muscle in the fourth inning of the Padres’ 3-2 victory in 10 innings. While making a running catch, Vaughn “felt something funny.”

“At first, I thought I blew out my knee,” said Vaughn, who may pinch-hit until he returns to the starting lineup. “It started to hurt right away, so I knew something was wrong.

“It’s just very disappointing. I’ll be OK, but I feel like I let the team down. We get to this point, and now I can’t play. I wait until this point of the year to get hurt.”

Vaughn is determined to return quicker than expected.

“I don’t know how long they think I’m going to be out, but it’s not going to be that long,” Vaughn said. “I’m going to do whatever I can.”
