Cowboy Was Something Special

Gene Autry was truly an American hero. He was one of the greats in baseball as well. The man stood for something more than just making a fast buck. He always considered himself a fan of baseball before he was an owner. Autry always put the fans of the California Angels first. You don’t see too many of that type of guy left anymore. Gene was from a different time and a different era. Those were the days where good guys wore the white hats and evil men always paid the price in the end.

Maybe Autry’s Angels never won the World Series, but Autry’s students always were winners on the field of play. When Nolan Ryan fanned 5,714 batters and threw seven no-hitters, Gene Autry won. When Reggie Jackson was voted into the Hall of Fame, Autry scored a W. Autry touched the lives of so many players and everyday fans in such a good and decent way. Maybe that was his World Series win. The singing cowboy will never be forgotten.

A few months ago, you printed a letter from Andrew M. Weiss of Studio City critical of Jim Murray. Murray passed away about a week later. Last Saturday, you again printed a letter from Mr. Weiss, this time critical of the Angels. The letter appeared in the same edition that reported the death of Angel patriarch Gene Autry.

Please . . . do not print any more of his letters.
