Volunteers for Elderly Get $10,000 Grant

Caregivers: Volunteers Assisting the Elderly received a $10,000 grant from the Archstone Foundation. The money will be used for in-home support of frail elderly in Ventura and Santa Paula, who may be at risk of premature placement in care facilities.

Oxnard High Students Get Merit Letter * Three seniors at Oxnard High School received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship program: Livia Borak, Lea Gonzalez and Handri Sufyadi. About 34,000 students nationwide received letters recognizing “exceptional academic promise.” Although not eligible for Merit Scholarship awards, commended students placed among the top 5% of more than 1 million students who entered the 1999 Merit Program. Placement is based on results of the 1997 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
