Foes Plan Meeting on Marblehead Project
A citizens group opposed to the city-approved plan for the Marblehead Coastal development will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday to introduce an initiative to change it.
San Clemente Citizens for Responsible Development was organized earlier this year “to force the developer to go back to the city’s General Plan of 1992, which would have put 300 homes, a resort hotel, a golf course and a park” on the site, Chairman Gene Habich said.
The group wants to overturn the council’s Aug. 5 approval of Lusk Co.’s plan to put 434 single-family homes, a 14-acre canyon preserve, a movie theater and a retail center on the coastal land.
The developers are revising their plan to exclude large retail stores, including a Target and an Albertsons, which the council rejected at the same meeting.
But that is not enough of a change for the citizens group.
Members will attempt to gather enough signatures in the next few months to overturn Lusk’s plan and implement the resort plan. Signatures of 15% of the city’s registered voters would allow the City Council to enact the group’s initiative; signatures from 10% would put the initiative on next year’s ballot, Habich said.
