Teen Arrested After Crash Kills Passenger
A 17-year-old driver, allegedly drunk and speeding on a road connecting the Corona del Mar and San Diego freeways, lost control of his car and slammed into a tree, killing a 22-year-old passenger, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Jacob Joseph Madrid, 22, of Costa Mesa died of massive head and neck injuries at the scene shortly after the crash at 10:03 p.m. Thursday, CHP spokeswoman JoAnn O’Haire said. He was wearing a seat belt and riding in the passenger seat of the 1989 Honda Civic sedan, which skidded down an embankment.
The driver, who also was wearing a safety belt, suffered minor injuries.
Officers said the teen, whose name was withheld because of his age, failed a sobriety test and was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
Other charges may be considered by the district attorney’s office, O’Haire said.
He was taken to Juvenile Hall.
