Head Start Facility to Add Classroom
Acknowledging a need to keep up with an expanding clientele, a zoning administrator approved Friday a new 2,130-square-foot portable classroom at a Head Start child care facility in North Hollywood.
At a public hearing held at the Sherman Oaks Woman’s Club, there was no opposition to Volunteers of America’s application to add the classroom to its campus at 7625 Lankershim Blvd.
“We’re just planning for the high need in the area,” said Sima D. Michaels, director of children’s services for the nonprofit organization. “Our program doubled in the last year.”
The new 34-student classroom will be in addition to another classroom that already holds 34, said Jack Delaporte, vice president of real estate at Volunteers of America.
Children 3 to 5 years old, from mostly economically disadvantaged families, attend the Head Start school to become prepared for public schools, Michaels said. Head Start is a federally funded program.
The permit granted Friday was needed for the increase in students the new classroom would allow at the child care facility.
