Dodgers Have Become Village-Idiot People

Share

Of the following three quotes regarding the Dodgers’ search for a new manager, only one is truly correct and not suspect:

Dodger General Manager Kevin Malone said, “I’m disappointed because Felipe turned down a great opportunity.” Dodger fans, along with Felipe Alou, will wait and see what a great opportunity he turned down.

Davey Johnson said, “With all the resources and talent they have there, they could hire the village idiot and win.” The Dodgers need much more than an idiot to field a competitive team next year.

Davey Lopes said, “The mystique is gone.” Mr. Lopes, you are absolutely right.

Davey Johnson stated that the Dodgers “could hire the village idiot and win.” Unfortunately, with all the turmoil Fox has created, even a village idiot would think twice about wearing the Dodger blue.

I suppose that it’s a lot of wasted time, but I hope that the Fox team in charge of the Dodgers will consult Mr. O’Malley on how to run a baseball team. The manager of the Dodgers used to be the prime job in baseball! Now, they’ve got to go to plan C! As recently as a year ago, they would never have had to go past plan A.

The trouble with Randy Harvey’s plan A-B-C-D for the Dodgers is that it is a “play-it-safe” policy. Davey Johnson is better than Kevin Kennedy, but he wears out his welcome too fast.

Why not a Plan E, which would be Davey Lopes? It’s a worthy gamble with no negative fallout. Lopes would create tremendous P.R. for Malone. If Lopes should fail, I don’t think reporters would bash Malone for hiring an “inexperienced” manager.
