California Lutheran University will host a Special Olympics soccer tournament Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

About 200 young athletes are expected to participate in the fourth annual five-a-side Soccer Tournament, one of several events planned for the Ventura County Special Olympics.

“There’s a very fulfilling warm spirit to anything involving Special Olympians--a different kind of atmosphere that seems to bring everyone together,” said Bruce Bryde, Cal Lutheran’s athletic director.

“If you want to see the sheer joy of playing, go work with Special Olympians,” he said.

Traveling from as far away as San Diego, the 20 to 25 teams will compete on the school’s north campus.

Games will begin at 9 a.m., and the awards ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m.

More than 150 Cal Lutheran students will help out at the tournament, making it one of the school’s biggest volunteer events, said Bryde.
