Hayes, a sophomore from University High, scored four points as fourth-ranked Irvine beat second-ranked UCLA, 7-5, in the Northern California Tournament final on Sunday. Hayes, who has 12 points this season, had two goals Sunday in a 6-5 victory over Pacific in the semifinals.

THIS WEEK

Men’s soccer: Irvine goes on the road this week to play at Washington Friday and Oregon State Sunday after splitting two matches at home last week. UCLA scored two goals early, then hung on to beat Irvine, 2-1, but the Anteaters (7-4, 1-1) bounced back Sunday to defeat Sacramento State, 4-0.

Women’s soccer: The chances of playing in the postseason were certainly hurt by last weekend’s 3-1 loss to Pacific. Irvine (10-3-2, 4-1-1) trails Pacific and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for the Big West’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Stephanie Rigamat scored both Irvine goals in Friday’s 2-0 victory over Long Beach. This week, Irvine plays at San Jose State Tuesday before Big West home games at 7 p.m. Friday against Boise State and 1 p.m. Sunday against Idaho.

Volleyball: Tandie Wade had a big week with 20 kills and 18 digs as the Anteaters split two matches. UCI swept Utah State but lost in four games to Nevada. Irvine (7-16, 3-5) travels Thursday to Boise State and Saturday to Idaho.

Water polo: The Anteaters, who have a six-game winning streak, face Long Beach State at 7 p.m. Wednesday, USC at noon Saturday and Pepperdine at noon Sunday, all at Heritage Park in Irvine. Ryan Bailey continues to lead UCI (10-4, 2-0) as conference’s leading scorer with 46 points.
