Fullerton police will host a rally Saturday to celebrate national Red Ribbon Week.

Fullerton schoolchildren will participate in the anti-drug rally from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Police Department, 237 W. Commonwealth Ave.

Former Los Angeles Dodger Ken Landreaux will speak.

The free event also will feature a demonstration by the department’s SWAT team and canine teams, Trooper the Talking Police Car and other games and youth activities.

Children will be invited to sign pledges to stay drug-free. More than 120 million people have signed the pledge since the first national Red Ribbon Week celebration in 1985.

Red Ribbon Week began after the slaying of Drug Enforcement Administration agent Enrique Camarena in Mexico in 1985.

Outraged parents began the nationwide event, urging citizens to wear red ribbons in his memory.

Fullerton police officers wear ribbons in memory of their own colleague, Det. Tommy De La Rosa, who was gunned down by drug traffickers while working on a narcotics case in Downey in 1990.
