A series of 40 aftershocks, the strongest a moderate 4.1 in magnitude, continued Tuesday north of Big Bear Lake, where a 4.9 temblor hit the day before.

The largest of the aftershocks took place at 7:40 a.m., Caltech seismologists said, and by noon the sequence appeared to be fading. All of the aftershocks were centered four miles north of Big Bear City.

None of the quakes have caused damage or injuries.
