Pampas and Circumstance

It takes two to tango, but many more to applaud. At least that’s the way it happened at Leyenda Gaucha, an Argentine barbecue and fashion show that drew a crowd recently to the courtyard of Myra Magis Atelier de Couture in Fullerton.

Claudio and Gloria--yep, they prefer single names--performed the hot dance in front of 60 guests of the boutique. Three folk guitarists and a ballet folklorico troupe led by Maria del Carmen Cena added to the entertainment mix.

There were other attractions, tasty ones. The menu included empanadas, traditional beef and sausage on the grill, and fruit marinated in white wine. “It’s really good,” designer Magis said.

That was also pretty much the feeling about her pampas-inspired fashions.

Magis, who was raised in Mendoza, Argentina, updates the traditional look with contemporary fabrics and practicality. Her full gaucho pants are cuffed. Her blouses include a scarf as a built-in collar. And a poncho converts into stylish evening attire.

To celebrate the store’s 10th anniversary, Magis will present a series of events at the Fullerton Museum Center:

* Nov. 6, “Hello, Bueno Aires,” a night of tango lessons, fashion and food. $15.

* Nov. 7, silk painting classes for adults and children. $8.

* Nov. 6-8, “Ten Years of Fashion & Illustration” exhibit. Free.
