School Offers Annual Halloween Party for Kids

As a safe daytime alternative to trick or treating, a family-oriented Halloween party for children will be held Saturday at Langdon Avenue Elementary School in North Hills.

During preparation for the event, volunteers found enough hypodermic needles to fill a shoe box while cleaning up the neighborhood, said Manny Velasquez, spokesman for Vecinos Unidos Contra La Violencia, a North Hills violence-prevention group that is hosting the party. “It makes us all the more committed to local violence prevention,” he said.

The fourth annual Happy Homes for Halloween gives neighborhood children a chance to gather bags of candy without putting themselves at risk in what has become one of the Valley’s toughest and poorest neighborhoods, Velasquez said.

The party will offer free andy to children and feature live music and games said Jean Morrison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women, one of the event sponsors.

The party will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Langdon Avenue Elementary School, 8817 Langdon Ave. For directions or more information, call Vecinos Unidos at (818) 787-4778.
