FISH REPORT

FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Trout limits are common on the lower lake. On the upper lake, anglers fishing mudsuckers and shad-pattern lures at 25 feet are catching an occasional largemouth bass. John Flack, Sherman Oaks, caught a 7-pound 7-ounce bass on an AC Plug. Striped bass also are being caught sporadically, with AC Plugs and other trout-pattern surface lures getting them. Top striper, a 12-pounder by Kevin Gilfoy, Castaic, on a homemade lure.

PYRAMID LAKE--Lots of small stripers are being caught on surface lures in the morning but they’re sinking out of sight during the day. Some catfish and largemouth bass.

LAKE PIRU--Trollers are doing well for trout, using bright-colored Rapalas, Roostertails and Needlefish. Largemouth bass are active, but the fish are small, biting mostly on night crawlers and plastic worms.

LAKE CACHUMA--The bass are fairly deep, averaging three-four pounds and biting on spoons. Trout fishing has slowed, but those using night crawlers are catching some at the dam.

CASITAS LAKE--The bass bite has slowed. Most of the focus is on trout, with those trolling Needlefish very deep near the dam catching the bigger holdovers and those casting small spinners near the docks catching the DFG planter-sized rainbows. A 25-pound catfish was caught by F.D. Williamson, Oxnard, on squid.

IRVINE LAKE--A 13-9 bass was caught during a recent night tournament by Roby Gant, Lake Forest, on a Robo Worm at Sierra Cove. The lake received a plant of 2,000 Florida-strain largemouth bass fingerlings in an attempt to eventually transform the reservoir in Silverado into a trophy bass fishery. The lake will be closed Monday through Wednesday so preparations--heavy trout plants--can be made for Thursday’s opener.

CORONA LAKE--Trout season opened with a bang Thursday because of heavy stocking all week, and another plant of large rainbows from Mt. Lassen Trout Farms is scheduled for today. Only a heat wave--and possibly large weekend crowds--will put a damper on the bite. Catfish and crappie are being caught as well.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Catfish will be targeted this week, but the attention will shift to trout when the season opens Thursday. A 14-pound catfish tops the weekly report.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Michael Dedmon of Anaheim caught a lake-record 68-pound catfish on a chunk of yellowtail at Three Pipes. The catfish bite remains good and there will be no limit on how many you can take Sunday through Nov. 22 because lake officials hope to remove as many as possible for the trout opener that week. Some small bass are being caught. A float-tube bass derby is scheduled for Nov. 7. Details: (949) 362-3885.

OSO RESERVOIR--The bass have moved a little deeper but the bite remains fair to good. George Clough, Irvine, caught and released an eight-pounder that struck a Spider jig at the bottom near the dam. The lake also produced a 2 1/2-pound bluegill.

LAKE PERRIS--Trout are biting at the dam. Jonathon Stuart, Redlands, must have thought a monster trout had inhaled his blue Power Bait but it turned out to be a 10-pound bass. Most of the bass, however, are the same size as the trout, averaging eight-13 inches.

LAKE SKINNER--Art Hill, Temecula, caught a 15 1/2-pound striped bass on a Shad-Rap at the north shore. The striper bite is fair on top-water lures. Catfish and trout are biting as well.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout fishing remains fair for trollers using Rapalas, Super Dupers and Needlefish. Most anglers are getting two or three fish a day. Top catch, a 5-pound 6-ounce rainbow by Kenneth Gibson, Apple Valley, while jigging for panfish at Gray’s Dock.

SILVERWOOD LAKE--Limits of trout are being filled by those using Roostertails and Power Bait. A 10-pound catfish was caught on a chicken liver and a few largemouth bass were caught on spinnerbaits, plastic grubs and worms.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--San Vicente and Hodges offer the best bass fishing, but the bites are only fair. Both lakes produced eight-pounders. San Vicente yielded hundreds of bluegill as well as a 28-pound blue catfish. El Capitan, open for fishing on Saturdays and Sundays only, is slow.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trollers using Thomas Buoyants and Rapalas, and bait fishermen using Power Bait are getting steady bites and some are getting limits of fair-sized trout. Sean Monfort and Brad Montejano, El Cajon, caught 10 trout totaling 18 pounds on green Power Bait.

EASTERN SIERRA--The season closes Saturday evening and many have called it quits already. Marisa Jung, an 8-year-old from Rancho Santa Margarita, was not among them and had one of the most impressive catches, a 5 3/4-pound brown trout she fooled with yellow Power Bait at Upper Twin Lake in Mammoth Lakes. Other good bets: Convict Lake, where large rainbows are coming out daily; Crowley Lake, where temperatures are more comfortable and the fishing pretty good for trollers using Needlefish, Super Dupers, Rapalas; all along the June Lake loop, and Bridgeport Reservoir, where fish averaging two-three pounds have been the rule for trollers for weeks.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--16 anglers (1 boat): 29 calico bass, 34 sand bass, 40 mackerel, 3 ocean whitefish, 2 rockfish.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--33 anglers (2 boats): 2 yellowtail, 621 sculpin, 105 rockfish, 3 lingcod, 32 calico bass, 10 barracuda.

PORT HUENEME--30 anglers (2 boats): 1 calico bass, 42 red snapper, 1 ocean whitefish, 61 sculpin, 71 rockfish, 7 lingcod, 127 rock cod, 2 cow cod.

MARINA DEL REY--39 anglers (3 boats): 1 halibut, 69 sand bass, 16 calico bass, 69 sculpin, 1 barracuda, 1 cabezon.
