Detmer No. 2 Behind 49ers’ Young

Ty Detmer, who began the exhibition season as the San Francisco 49ers’ third quarterback, has moved up the chart and will back up Steve Young. Jim Druckenmiller dropped to No. 3.

“There were pros and cons to going either way, but right now, from a consistency factor, we feel just a little bit more comfortable with Ty,” Coach Steve Mariucci said.

Green Bay Packer running back Dorsey Levens, who recently ended his holdout, practiced for the first time since the Super Bowl, and flanker Robert Brooks returned to action 24 days after undergoing back surgery.

The Packers, meanwhile, traded center Mike Flanagan, a third-year player from UCLA, to the Carolina Panthers for a draft choice and expressed interest in signing quarterback Rick Mirer, who was cut by the Chicago Bears.

The Dallas Cowboys re-signed running back Sherman Williams, who was cut when former Seattle running back Chris Warren was signed. Warren has a groin injury and won’t play for about a month.

Dallas police, meanwhile, concluded their investigation into a topless dancer’s sexual-assault accusation against offensive lineman Larry Allen but filed no charges.

The Washington Redskins said quarterback Jeff Hostetler will not require surgery on his injured knee and could even dress for Sunday’s opener against the New York Giants. . . . With quarterback Erik Kramer nursing a sprained left big toe, Steve Stenstrom might start Sunday for the Chicago Bears against Jacksonville. . . . Cornerback Ryan McNeil, the NFL interception leader last season with nine, agreed to a one-year contract with the St. Louis Rams. Financial terms were not disclosed. He is expected to practice with the team today.
