Residents, scientists and local government officials are being sought for a new committee to help the government manage the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary Advisory Council will meet regularly and offer recommendations on management of the sanctuary, which includes offshore resources surrounding the islands off the Ventura and Santa Barbara coast.
Representatives for the panel are being sought from commercial and recreational groups, environmental organizations, scientific institutions and federal, state and local government agencies.
To apply, call 966-7107. Applications are due by Sept. 30.
The council’s first meeting is scheduled for Nov. 19.
The 1,658-square-mile sanctuary is composed of ocean and near-shore habitat extending up to six miles off the coast of the five Channel Islands. It is home to 28 species of mammals and 60 species of birds as well as shipwrecks and Indian sites.
