Neighbors and friends comforted a Highland Park family Tuesday for the loss of Steven Morales, their 12-year-old son, who was gunned down Saturday while playing with children on a dead-end street.

The family has put plans for funeral services on hold because the boy’s body is still being held for examination at the coroner’s office.

A fund has been established to help defray funeral expenses. Donations can be made to the Steven Morales Memorial Fund, C/O Natalie Hernandez, Whittier Federal Credit Union, 8028 Greenleaf Ave., Whittier, 90602. Information: (562) 698-8326.

Meanwhile, Julie Smith, spokeswoman for Loma Linda University Medical Center, said that Lori House, the Moreno Valley mother who received Steven’s liver, was in critical but stable condition Tuesday after undergoing a seven-hour operation Monday.
