KCET Honors Latinos for Community Service

KCET is honoring five Latinos for their contributions to the arts, social services and education.

Half-minute features on the honorees will be broadcast on KCET during Hispanic Heritage month, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, said J.C. Flores, a spokeswoman for the station.

The five honorees, who received plaques in ceremonies at KCET come from a variety of backgrounds:

Richard S. Amador is a founding partner of the law firm Sanchez and Amador in Los Angeles. As chairman of the Board of Managers for the East L.A. YMCA, he also works to ensure that thousands of low-income families have access to child care and fitness programs.

Viredo Espinosa, an Orange County-based painter, designs posters to help Cuban American youths achieve academic success.

Juana Mora, head of Chicano Studies at Cal State Northridge, has specialized her research on alcoholism among Latinos. She also mentors promising Latino scholars.

Irma Resendez conducts counseling work on behalf of non-English-speaking people with multiple sclerosis. Resendez founded Familia Unida, a support group for multiple sclerosis patients and their families.

Angela Sanbrano has been an international peace activist and now works as executive director of the Central American Resource Center, a Pico-Union organization dedicated to empowering Central Americans and other Latinos.
