Cadence Design Systems Inc., which makes software to speed the design of microprocessors, said it will buy Santa Clara-based Ambit Design Systems Inc. for $260 million in cash to strengthen its technology offerings. Closely held Ambit makes tools for so-called system-on-a-chip technology, designed to put the functions of different computer chips on one microprocessor. San Jose-based Cadence is seeking to expand its product line of tools associated with making system-on-a-chip technology.
