Ex-Coach Gets 1-Year Term for Sex With Minor

A former drill team coach at Cerritos High School who pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor was sentenced Thursday to a year in prison and three years’ probation.

Christopher L. Cherry also was ordered by Norwalk Superior Court Judge John Torribio to register as a sex offender, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Michael Villalobos. He has already served a year behind bars, authorities said.

By law, Cherry cannot work where minors are present while he is on probation, and he must stay away from the victim, at least until she turns 18, Villalobos said.

Cherry struck up a relationship with the girl when she was 15, and the two had sex in his van or at a motel, the prosecutor said.

The relationship went on for about a year until the girl reported Cherry to the school district, Villalobos said.

Cherry pleaded guilty in April to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
