Flight Change Averts Tennis Tragedy

Marc Rosset, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist from Switzerland, had been scheduled to travel Wednesday night from New York to Geneva on Swissair Flight 111.

At the last minute, Rosset, who had lost in the first round of the U.S. Open, changed his mind and decided to stay in New York for some more practice.

“I believe in destiny,” Rosset told a Zurich newspaper. “I don’t think it was time to go yet.”

Flight 111 crashed into the water off the coast of Nova Scotia, killing all 229 passengers aboard. Rosset’s experience was reminiscent of the time former tour player Derrick Rostagno decided at the last minute to get off a connecting flight in 1986 in Mexico City.

The plane, bound for his home in Los Angeles, crashed shortly after takeoff and killed all passengers aboard.
