Chabad of the Conejo

Chabad of the Conejo invites Jews of all backgrounds to its High Holiday services at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza Hotel in Westlake Village, beginning with Rosh Hashanah services on Sept. 20, to usher in the Jewish New Year.

Special arrangements have been made to accommodate those interested in spending the holidays at the hotel, including kosher catered meals, said Rabbi Moshe Bryski of Chabad of the Conejo.

Singer-Guitarist to Perform

Andrea Massion, singer and guitarist, will present Hebrew and English songs at Congregation Am HaYam in Oxnard during Selichot on Sept. 12, beginning at 10 p.m. A midnight service will follow.

Beginning with Erev Rosh Hashanah on Sept. 20, numerous other services will be held in September, including Yom Kippur on Sept. 30.

All activities, except for Selichot and Tashlich, will be at the Oxnard Monday Club, 1401 W. Gonzales Road. Call 656-6634 for the Selichot location. The Tashlich service Sept. 21 will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Oxnard Shores Beach.

Series of Services Planned

Ventura County Jewish Council--Temple Beth Torah in Ventura will observe the High Holidays in a series of services.

The two most significant days of the High Holidays are Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year on Sept. 20 through 22, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, which begins Sept. 29.

Rabbi Lisa Hochberg-Miller will conduct a Selichot program at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 12, which will include discussion and dessert. A Selichot service will also be held at 9:30 p.m. Sept. 20.

At 10 a.m. Sept. 21, the congregation will observe the arrival of the New Year with the blowing of the shofar, a ram’s horn. At 4 p.m., a family service will be held at the temple and at 5:30 p.m., there will be an oceanfront Tashlich service. In that service, the congregation will bring in Jewish Year 5759 by casting bread crumbs, which represent the past year’s shortcomings, into the ocean.

On Sept. 27, a graveside memorial service will be held at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura at 1 p.m.

The Yom Kippur service at 10 a.m. Sept. 30 will be held at the temple. A healing service will follow. The family service will begin at 2 p.m. A Yizkor memorial service at 5 p.m. that day will close the High Holiday services.

A Sukkot Festival service will be held at the Ventura temple at 10 a.m. Oct. 5 to celebrate the ancient harvest of the wandering Israelites.

A Shabbat dinner in the Sukkah, a temporary dwelling constructed on temple grounds, will follow at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9.

Tickets are required for morning and evening services on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, said Annette Halpern, the temple’s director of communications. Children’s programs and child care also require reservations. Tickets are not necessary for family services or the 10 a.m. service Sept. 22.

Thousand Oaks Temple Services

Rosh Hashana services at Temple Etz Chaim in Thousand Oaks will begin at 8:15 p.m. Sept. 20. Services Sept. 21 and 22 will be held at 9:30 a.m. Accompanying cantor Jeff Cohen will be a 20-voice choir under the direction of Carol Wechsler.

Yom Kippur services will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29 with the chanting of Kol Nidrey.

On both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, family services will be held in the temple sanctuary at 2:30 p.m. The temple’s junior congregation will also hold services each holiday for children in grades three through seven from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Child care will be provided for children from 2 to 8 years old, and reservations are required.
